Just in case you’ve been off-planet for the last few months, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is an American fantasy television series based on the novel The Lord of the Rings and its appendices by J. R. R. Tolkien.
Just in case you’re wondering, the appendices – and there are six of them – give the lowdown on the history, cultures, genealogies, and languages that Tolkien imagined for the peoples of Middle-earth.
Amazon bought the television rights for The Lord of the Rings for $250 million in November 2017. They made a five-season production commitment worth at least one billion dollars. Amazon’s pockets are obviously deeper than the Balrog’s hiding place at the roots of Caradhras.

Amazon are also being a bit secretive about their cast. Although they’ve released dozens of names, they’re still keeping certain characters up their wizard’s sleeve.
But apparently there’s going to be quite a few familiar characters. The main one will be the sinister Sauron, whose thirst for power almost ruined the Second Age. In the first teaser trailer, we get a glimpse of Lord of Imladris, a relative of the Númenorean kings and a leader in the Last Alliance between elves and men. Amazon has also confirmed the return of Galadriel, who possessed a ring of power, and obviously a good agent as well. Plus, keep an eye out for Elrond!
We can confirm that Gladriel will be played by Morfydd Clark and Elrond will be played by Robert Aramayo.
As for other notable characters, we’ll have Charlie Vickers as Halbrand, Nazanin Boniadi as Bronwyn, Ismael Cruz Córdova as Arondir, Sophia Nomvete as Disa, Owain Arthur as Prince Durin IV, Maxim Baldry as Isildur, plus loads more.

Surprise, surprise, Amazon are being cagey about the plot as well. But the good news is they’ve released a synopsis. It’s not as long as you might like, and doesn’t give too much away, but it’s a start. Actually, it’s more of a tease. Here it is:
This epic drama is set thousands of years before the events of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, and will take viewers back to an era in which great powers were forged, kingdoms rose to glory and fell to ruin, unlikely heroes were tested, hope hung by the finest of threads, and the greatest villain that ever flowed from Tolkien's pen threatened to cover all the world in darkness (Editor’s note: Yes, it’s Sauron, the dastardly Lord of the Rings himself.) Beginning in a time of relative peace, the series follows an ensemble cast of characters, both familiar and new, as they confront the long-feared re-emergence of evil to Middle-earth. From the darkest depths of the Misty Mountains, to the majestic forests of the elf-capital of Lindon, to the breathtaking island kingdom of Númenor, to the furthest reaches of the map, these kingdoms and characters will carve out legacies that live on long after they are gone.
